Maybe you had to be there, but probably you didn’t. The short-lived 1999 TV series Freaks and Geeks is a cult-classic time capsule of hallway shenanigans, friendships, and the trials and tribulations of getting a boner for Cindy Sanders. And now, 15 years later, the show is being dug up as a complete series DVD for all the lovers, and a new generation of fans.
The early work of now big-time ballers Judd Apatow (The 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up) and Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, Arrested Development) and the starting block for actors like Seth Rogen, James Franco and Jason Segel, Freaks and Geeks is so legendary that pop-culture nerds quake in its presence. For some, the love bloomed because of the brooding Daniel Desario, the unsuspecting (and totally unwarranted) sexual confidence of Harris Trinksky, the stoner chitchat, or the awkward parents, but for us, it was no doubt the bond between Bill Haverchuck and his friends that sealed the deal. It’s one of the only high school shows that got it right, and for that, we raise our Cola flavour Super Doopers to Freaks and Geeks.
Freaks and Geeks The Complete Series is out now at all DVD retailers worth their salt, RRP $39.95, and includes 29 commentary tracks, two hours of new show material, behind the scenes, bloopers and more.
