When 40-year-old, misanthropic anti-hero, Guy Trilby (Jason Bateman), discovers a loophole in the rules of The Golden Quill national spelling bee, he decides to cause trouble by exploiting the competition. Infuriating the contest officials, overbearing parents, and ambitious 8th graders, Guy ruthlessly crushes their dreams of victory and fame at every turn, as they prove no match for this unlikely intruder. Sponsored by online reporter, Jenny (Hahn) who tags along with him to the championships in Los Angeles, Guy finds himself forging an unlikely alliance with a competitor: awkward 10-year-old Chaitanya (Chand), who is completely unfazed by his take-no-prisoners approach to life. But for every action, there lies a reason, and Jenny is set on uncovering the true motivation behind Guy's behaviour.
