Brutal murder inspires Newcastle Theatre Company play

BEER, CARS, CHICKS: The Boys will show at Newcastle Theatre Company in Lambton.

THE Newcastle Theatre Company's newest production, The Boys, has been described as a "profoundly disturbing" play about a dysfunctional family who commit a terrible crime.

Inspired by the real life murder of Anita Cobby, The Boys examines the events leading to what happened in February 1986, and its aftermath.

"The play is about the dysfunctional three brothers, their mum and girlfriends," the theatre company's Howard Rawlinson said.

"The eldest brother Brett has just returned from a year in prison and now the only things in life that really matter for them are beer, fast cars and 'chicks'."

John Wood directs a talented cast led by Michael Byrne.

The Boys will run from October 4 to October 18 at the Newcastle Theatre Company, de Vitre Street, Lambton.

Wednesday, Friday and Saturday shows are at 8pm. Matinees will be held at 2pm on October 5 and 11.

Tickets, available from newcastletheatrecompany.com.au or by phoning 4952 4958, cost $28 for adults and $22 concessions.

The Examiner has one double pass to give away to the opening show on October 4, 8pm.

To win, send your name and contact details in an email titled "Boys" to ewatts@fairfaxmedia.com.au.

The winner will be notified by 5pm on Wednesday, October 1.
