After watching a film crew shoot footage of a gruesome car crash, low-level thief Louis Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal) embarks on a career as an amateur cameraman, trawling L.A. for grisly scenes to sell to a hungry news station. But as the need to capture increasingly more shocking footage escalates, Bloom begins to cross the line from observer to orchestrator.
If the subject matter of Nightcrawler sounds gruesome, the execution is gripping enough to stop you covering your eyes. Cinematographer Robert Elswit (There Will Be Blood, Good Night, and Good Luck) captures L.A. in all its stark, phosphorescent beauty, while writer and first-time director Dan Gilroy’s plot paces ahead with the momentum you’d expect of someone who penned The Bourne Legacy.
