The Giver is based on the cult novel The Giver by Lois Lowry. It's set in an alternative 'Ideal' world. There is no pain, war, suffering or disease. The problem with this ideal world is that there is also no colour, memories, choice or love.
The main character is Jonas (Australian, Brenton Thwaites), he and his friends are graduating and getting assigned their positions in the community. Jonas has been given the position of the sole Keeper of Memories. This means he gets to hang with Jeff Bridges and learn about the history of the world. This lets him see there is more to life and gradually colour begins to seep into his colourless world. This is a danger to the community and you don't want to piss Meryl Streep off.
This is a visually lovely and is perfectly fine to watch with the kids.
