WIN! Copies of ‘Ministry of Sound’s 80s Mix’

Okay, so we know the music maestros at Ministry of Sound have their fingers on the pulse, ears to the ground, and all of that, especially when it comes to progressive tunes. And we know they’re good at curating retro faves and redelivering them in the wisest order, with their recent ‘90s Anthems collections standing testament to this. But what if we were to test them to see how far into the ’80s they could go to find excellent music? Would they get lost in some kind of Marty McFly Back To The Future scenario? Caught up in too much coke-snorting and decadent shenanigans? Distracted by too much makeup and neon fashion to focus on the real business at hand?

Well, the Ministry maestros have managed to get some serious research done, only to dust off enough gems to fill not two, not three, but four discs to make Ministry Of Sound: 80s Mix.

Disc One features electro classics, kicking off with Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s righteous anthem Relax and moving on to mega tunes from The Human League, Soft Cell, New Order and Blondie. There’s also a wave of New Romantic hits from the likes of Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Nik Kershaw and anyone else with a semi-bleached hairdo.

Then grab your boom box, because Disc Two is jammed full of dank ’80s hip hop (and what we like to consider The Birth of uUban) including tracks by Salt’N’Pepa, Erik B & Rakim,  Grandmaster Flash and the latter-day rap likes of Beastie Boys and NWA.

Disc Three celebrates disco, with boss jams from Sister Sledge, Hall & Oates, Shalamar and Womack & Womack.

And finally, house takes a hold of Disc Four, with the most reminiscent tracks of Euro-house from Black Box, Technotronic, Inner City, S’Xpress and those masters of sampling, Coldcut.

All up, this is the best cross-representation of 80s music we’ve heard, well, in ages.  Michael Mastess

Cream has 10 copies ‘Ministry of Sound: 80s Mix’ to give away. To try winning a four-disc CD tell us the name of your favourite ’80s track and send it along with your name, address and the Subject heading ‘80s Mix’ to cream@pobox.com by 5pm AEST, Friday 3 April.
Go for it, give it a tweet!
