Written and directed by Andrey Zvyagintsev (The Return, Elena), one of modern world cinema’s genuine masters, Leviathan tells the story of Kolya (Aleksei Serebriakov), a rash and righteous local of the coastal town, Pribrezhny. Not a stranger to bad luck, Kolya is faced with the prospect of losing his house after the morally corrupt local mayor, Vadim (Roman Madyanov), calls for its repossession through a series of self-serving legal loopholes. Nominated for best foreign language film at the Academy Awards, Leviathan is a chilling film playing with ideas of betrayal, heartache and human nature at its very core.
