Competition Structure
- 3 bands are invited to perform in each Heat
– Semi-final #1 sees the three winning bands competing from Heats 1, 2 and 3.
– Semi-final #2 sees the three winning bands competing from Heats 4, 5 and 6.
– Grand Final sees the winning bands from the Semi Finals 1&2 compete plus a third “wild card” band, wild card band is selected by the competition judges from the remaining pool of competitors.
– Competition is judged by a panel of 3 judges.
– Judging criteria (three components):
1. Song-writing (includes vocal and instrumentation)
2. Performance (includes stage presence, presentation of songs, and “tightness” of the band)
3. Audience reaction (how audience responds to performance)
Each judge scores each band a score from 1-10 points in each of the criteria listed above, 1 being an undesirable score and 10 being a desirable score. So each band will receive a final score out of 90 (three judges allocating a maximum of 30 points each). Band with highest score wins their Heat/Semi-Final/Grand Final.
- MC Justin Owen will be tasked with hosting the night.

DFP will broker on behalf of The Star all cash and prize transactions between the winning band and any third parties.
The total winning prize is $25,000 in cash and prizes.
The prize consists of three parts and includes:
1. $10,000 cash: Paid to winners’ nominated bank account on receipt of correctly formatted invoice, no later than 1 month after competition conclusion.
2. $7,500 RRP worth of musical equipment from Turramurra Music (some exclusions apply including certain computer software and hardware items and small number of other products as stipulated by the retailer). Prize valid until 5pm Friday 15th April, 2016. (6 months from competition conclusion)
3. $7,500 studio recording time through Def Wolf Studios. (5 days of recording time to a maximum of 8 hours per day). Prize valid until 5pm Friday 15th April, 2016. (6 months from competition conclusion).
Terms & Conditions
Bands must be able to perform FIVE complete original songs in their heat.
To be eligible to enter, bands must not be “signed”. Signed includes having a formal arrangement for recording and/or publishing with a record label, OR being managed by a professional manager OR being represented by a professional booking agent. Any questions that pertain to the above regulation are to be directed to DFP. Final decisions on eligibility for entry into the competition are at the discretion of DFP and The Star.
To be eligible for entry into the competition bands must – should they win their heat – be available to perform on the dates set for the SEMI and GRAND finals.
