Originally written and produced for the stage in 2003, Last Cab to Darwin's writer Reg Cribb and director/co-writer Jeremy Sims have successfully managed to bring to life their interpretation of the true story of terminally ill Broken Hill taxi driver Max Bell who in 1996 drove 3000km from Broken Hill to Darwin, in order to legally end his life via the Northern Territory's newly passed voluntary euthanasia bill.
Last Cab to Darwin chronicles the journey of terminally ill 70 year old taxi driver Rex (Michael Caton) who following a recent prognosis of 3 months to live, hears word of NT's recently passed voluntary euthanasia bill and the work of euthanasia advocate Dr Nicole Farmer (Jackie Weaver). This is his catalyst to venture away from Broken Hill - for the first time in his life, such is his drive to die with dignity. Rex's life isn't without emotional ties and complications, through his relationship with neighbour Polly (Ningali Lawford-Wolf).
Rex quickly settles into life on the road and at William Creek, meets Tilly (Michael Coles Smith). Together, Rex and Tilly travel to Darwin – stopping at Daly Waters, where they meet Julie (Emma Hamilton) – a British registered nurse by trade who's on a working holiday, working the bar of Daly Waters.
It's a complex and emotional journey for Rex, Tilly and Julie as they explore their roots and their reason for being here, on this earth. With the support of Julie and Dr Farmer - Rex focuses on making the most of his final days.
Sims and Cribb capture the essence of Australia's outback and Top End culture - as Tilly goes walk-about to 'the long grass' and falls off the wagon just after getting his life together doing what he loves best – playing AFL football.
With music by Ed Kuepper combined with cinematography by Steve Arnold, I was left hankering for a road trip!
