Lenny Abrahamson’s film adaption of the award-winning novel by Emma Donoghue centres around the world of Jack and his Ma (Brie Larson), who spend every waking minute together inside a tiny garden shed. The seven-year-old, who was born and raised in what they call ‘Room’, has no sense that there might be a whole wide-world outside the walls in which him and his mother have been imprisoned. If Room sounds a little heavy, that would be because it is. It’s suspenseful and upsetting, but also a one of a kind look at the relationship between mother and child, and a cinematic wonder.
