Cabaret comedy trio Babushka comes to the Redland Performing Arts Centre at 6.30pm on Saturday, September 24.
Grab the girls and leave the kids at home so you can reminisce about your childhood BFF … your doll. Alicia Cush, Bethan Ellsmore and Judy Hainsworth are coming to nurse dolls, break dolls and become dolls in a crazed and cutesy cabaret that brings you a taste of everything from Guns’n’Roses to opera.
This frenzy of fuchsia is a riotous celebration of our playthings, our challenges as women in this ‘day and age’ and the ability to be our own hero. These potty-mouthed Polly Pockets are not afraid to go for broke when it comes to consumerism, gender-bias, the pressure to be a good mum and to look damn fabulous while you’re at it.
This is Babushka’s second time touring Queensland bringing their unmatchable voices, boisterous laughs and titillating stories. After the success of their debut touring work, I Can Keep A Secret, the girls are back to reconnect with locals, visit the pub and host a party. This will also be Judy Hainsworth’s second visit to Redland Performing Arts Centre after her performance in #FirstWorldWhiteGirls last year.
Babushka has an excellent formula for taking both well-known and obscure songs and completely reimagining them, creating stunning and often hilarious moments. Coupled with their blazing individual personalities and a knack for idiosyncratic humour, you have the recipe for an enthralling, side-splitting piece of theatre. All three performers are currently in Helpmann nominated shows and bring serious musical chops to the table.
Audiences can expect the unexpected, with bizarre musical mash-ups and a fantastically feminine production with a truly dirty mind. Highlights include some unexpected rapping, a giant flamingo and a recreation of that thing we all did with Ken and Barbie but never talk about. These incredible singers bring every inch of their stunning voices and performance skills to deliver a high-energy, uplifting and hilarious show that has real meat on its bones.
Tickets to see Babushka: Doll are $30 and seating is cabaret style in tables of 10.
