WIN TICKETS: Shakespeare in the park

Twelfth Night is loaded with every trick in the book – cross-dressing, mistaken identity, drunken knights, bawdy servants, lovelorn lords and ladies, and even a pirate. Don’t miss this opportunity to enjoy one of Shakespeare’s best-loved comedies performed under the stars at Redland Performing Arts Centre’s first Shakespeare in the Park from 6pm on Saturday,  September 10.

Twelfth Night is the final night of the Christmas season – traditionally celebrated by the turning upside-down of social relations and expectations, and presided over by the Lord of Misrule. It is the end of long celebration, the point where too much of a good thing leaves a sour taste. Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night features many Lords and Ladies of Misrule, whose misguided passions and extreme stratagems entangle them in a series of hilarious episodes.

When Viola is washed up on the shores of Illyria after a shipwreck, she disguises herself as a man and goes to work for the lovesick Duke Orsino. Orsino immediately sets Viola the task of wooing the Countess Olivia, a nearby lady in deep mourning for her deceased brother. No sooner has Viola become Orsino's love messenger than she finds herself falling in love with him, while Olivia, believing Viola to be a man, finds herself falling head over heels for the resourceful go-between. Meanwhile, Olivia's housekeeper Maria, determined not to become an old maid, abandons the gloom of her mistress' house of mourning for the bright underworld of perpetual party-animal, Sir Toby Belch. Together they devise a scheme to bring down Olivia's haughty, killjoy butler Malvolio once and for all, unleashing a riotous chain of chaos, confusion and obsession.

Prepare to be whisked away to a world where disorder triumphs, rebellion is in season and everything is turned gleefully on its head when the Queensland Shakespeare Ensemble (QSE) directed by Rob Pensalfini bring Twelfth Night to the outdoor stage at RPAC. There will be food stalls and entertainment on the Performance Lawn from 3pm.

Tickets are Adults $45, Seniors/Pensioners $42, Students $28 and groups of 10+ $35. There is also a special Shakespeare Package where tickets are $70 if you book Shakespeare in the Park Twelfth Night and Bell Shakespeare’s Othello at the same time. For bookings or further information call the RPAC Box Office on 3829 8131 or visit www.rpac.com.au (booking fees are $4.10 per transaction by phone and $3 per ticket online).

WIN:  Redland City Bulletin has one double pass (value $90) to give away. To be in the draw to win, enter your details below by 9am on Monday, September 5. Conditions may apply. Winners will be contacted by a representative from RPAC and their names announced online.
