Young At Heart, the only film festival in the world catering to film lovers over 60 years of age, is coming back to Brisbane with a specially curated selection of intense dramas, cracking comedies and riveting documentaries.
Highlights of Young At Heart include the Australian premiere of the period piece Viceroy’s House, starring Gillian Anderson, Michael Gambon and Hugh Bonneville. Based on the true story of India’s final Viceroy, Lord Mountbatten, who lived with 500 Hindu, Muslim and Sikh servants, the film is set during the 1947 partition of the British Indian Empire into India and Pakistan.
Boost your spirits with rousing period comedy Their Finest, set in Britain’s wartime film industry and adapted from the novel Their Finest Hour and a Half by director Lone Scherfig (An Education). Starring Jeremy Irons, Bill Nighy, Gemma Arterton, Jack Huston and Richard E Grant, the film pops with witty banter and flows with lovely period detail.
The late Australian artist Brett Whitely comes under the spotlight in the Australian premiere of the documentary Whiteley, directed by James Bogle. With contributions from the artist’s former wife Wendy Whiteley and his sister Frannie Hopkirk, the film features Brett’s own voice and offers a fascinating insight into one of the art world’s most brilliant and controversial figures.
The moving drama Tommy’s Honour is directed by Jason Connery, son of the legendary Sean Connery. Starring Sam Neill, Ophelia Lovibond and Peter Mullan, the film focuses on the relationship between Scottish father and son, Old Tom Morris and Young Tom Morris, and how their unique bond gave birth to the modern game of golf.
Award-winning Irish director Jim Sheridan (The Boxer) returns with his latest drama, The Secret Scripture, starring Vanessa Redgrave, Rooney Mara, Eric Bana, Theo James and Jack Reynor. Based on Sebastian Barry’s book of the same name, the story recounts the fictional diaries of Roseanne McNulty, who has been confined to an asylum for most of her life.
There will also be special retrospective screenings of the 1968 film The Lion in Winter, featuring the all-star cast of Katharine Hepburn (in her Academy Award-winning role), Peter O’Toole, John Castle and Anthony Hopkins. The film is based on James Goldman’s Broadway play about King Henry II and the extremes his family go to in an effort to coerce him into deciding which of his three sons will be the next king.

The Young At Heart film festival will be held at Palace Centro Cinemas from 20-26 April. For more information and tickets, visit palacecinemas.com.au.
