The NSW Writers’ Centre is giving away one free place to its full-day workshop, Crafting Arts Criticism, with critic Anwen Crawford. This workshop explores what separates a lively and effective piece of criticism from an ineffective one. It considers critical writing in terms of the structure of a critic’s argument, and examines how an argument is built sentence by sentence through vocabulary, voice and pacing. It also covers the importance of research and readership, and devotes time to the hows and whys of pitching arts criticism to publications. The writing principles examined are applicable to arts criticism in general (music, film, television, literature, visual art, etc). Participants will have the opportunity to receive feedback on their criticism.
Date: Saturday 24 June
Location: NSW Writers’ Centre, Sydney
