Researchers – family historians, social historians, and researchers from other fields LOVE directories as a source of information. But why?
Directories are fabulous because you can use them to help you pinpoint where a person was a particular time, and often track them using consecutive directories. The person will often be shown only by name, but with an occupation and address, both of which give you further clues on where to look next.
Look in the street-by-street listing, and they provide details of neighbours and other facilities (hospital, school, church, blacksmith etc) in the town or region helping you understand what the place was like back in the day. And if your ancestor had a business you might be lucky enough to find an advert for the business too, as so many directories have 100s of them throughout.
There are directories covering whole states as well as directories covering just a city, town or country region. There are medical directories, pastoral and brands directories (perfect for finding your farming ancestors), motoring directories, trade directories, even Catholic directories. There’s telephone books, and almanacs which are simply the best for finding anecdotal information.
