https://www.jewishnews.net.au/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Me-in-the-studio-992x558.jpgJudaica artist Nikki Green is giving away a hand-etched challah board made from local and sustainably-sourced Australian Jarrah wood to one lucky couple who has gotten married, or will be getting married, in 2017.
Nikki, who is based on the South Coast of Western Australia, is inspired by the Australian landscape, and her work explores the relationship of written language, ancient scripts, and the natural order. “I have designed the letters on the challah board so that they literally look like they are emerging from the earth. As the blessing states in Hebrew: ‘hamotzi lechem min ha-aretz’, meaning ‘who brings forth bread of the earth’,” said Nikki.
Nikki’s art has its origins in the celebration of Jewish tradition, from the ancient Dead Sea Scrolls to medieval manuscripts through to Kabbalistic thought and universal mysticism. Her works include custom-made Ketubot, manuscripts and blessing art pieces.
In her recent work, Nikki has been exploring the utilitarian treasures in the ritual objects of Judaica, combining age-old traditions and organic materials with contemporary digital processes. All her work is designed, sourced and hand-crafted in Australia.
