These are serious prizes, and we have multiple categories, for serious and not-so-serious photographers. You don’t even need photos of Lord Howe Island - our Best Travel Photo category is for inspiring photos from anywhere in the world (we always need inspiration). We also have some fun categories for kids under 12 and ‘happy snappers’ who capture amazing photos accidentally. Our categories include:
1. Landscape - or seascape, without people
2. Wildlife - one specimen or many
3. Underwater - at least 30% of the image shows an underwater scene
4. Texture - textures, patterns, or macro photography
5. Portrait - captures the personality of the subject, and can be an environmental portrait with the subject set in a context that accentuates personality
6. Children - must be taken by a child aged 12 or under (as of 8 January 2018) and can depict anything on Lord Howe Island
7. Happy Snappers - can be anything on Lord Howe Island, and is intended for the ‘happy snapper’ holiday photographer who captures an amazing photo
8. Best Travel Photo - inspires the viewer to visit the location of the photo, and can be taken anywhere in the world
The organisers – ShadowShaper Photography, artist Ben Waters, Pinetrees Lodge, and the Lord Howe Island Board – will only accept 800 entries from which the best 80 will be selected for the Kentia Prize Exhibition from 5-8 January 2018 in the Lord Howe Island Public Hall. The 2017 Exhibition was an outstanding event (see some of the winning photos below), and we expect the 2018 Exhibition to be bigger and better.
All funds raised from the Kentia Prize Competition will be donated to the Lord Howe Island Central School, to help our kids with resources that remote schools need. Even if you think your photos won’t win, submit them anyway, and the $15 entry fee (per photo) will help our kids.
Please download the rules and follow the instructions. Remember, we’ll only accept the first 800 entries so you’ll need to send your images well before the closing date of 5 December 2017.
