Her Majesty's Theatre Renewal Project
Your support to help us raise $3 million to complete the renewal of our iconic Her Majesty’s Theatre would be very much appreciated.

Her Majesty’s Theatre, the Grand Old Dame of Grote Street, has been serving and entertaining South Australia for over 100 years and she is in desperate need of an upgrade.

If 10,000 people give $50 (less than the price of a ticket) then we will raise at least half a million dollars in very quick time and this will be a great kickstart to improving “our Dame”.

Click on the DONATE NOW button and support this wonderful theatre – every gift will make a difference!

Her Majesty’s is the last theatre remaining from the famous national Tivoli vaudeville circuit. When she opened in 1913 she was regarded as the finest theatre in Australia. Her Majesty’s, managed and operated by Adelaide Festival Centre Trust, is showing her age. The Dame requires a loving and stylish upgrade and more importantly this will increase her seating capacity from 970 to around 1,500. This will help to provide the necessary financial return to attract long running major shows to Her Majesty’s.

Renewing this 100 year old heritage-listed theatre is a challenge. The initial estimate for this major project on the theatre’s current footprint was about $65 million. However, in 2014 we were given the option to buy 62 Grote Street, next door to Her Majesty’s. We have since purchased this property for $2 million which has dramatically reduced the cost of her redevelopment down to an affordable amount.

Her upgrade will modernise facilities for both artists and patrons. Work will include an additional balcony of seating, improved orchestral pit and technical facilities, a back of house upgrade as well as a new foyer and patron facilities including bars and toilets.

We need to do a lot of work at Her Majesty's… We need to bring it back to the state it was in originally. It is one of the great theatres of Australia.

Barry Humphries, Patron of HMT Renewal Project
The Case For Support:
More commercial blockbusters coming to Adelaide
A number of additional performances a year at Her Majesty’s Theatre
Greater opportunity for state and national performing arts companies to access Festival Theatre and the renewed Her Majesty’s Theatre
Increased revenue made by the Adelaide Festival Centre will be used for public purpose programs in children’s entertainment, educational programs, and multicultural engagement
Increased employment opportunities for artists, production staff, and related industries
Increased economic activity
Up to 220 construction jobs
Ongoing employment for artists, production staff, front of house staff, programmers, publicity and marketing staff
Up to 15,000 people will no longer have to travel interstate to see shows, with that revenue being retained in South Australia
An additional 11,000 bed nights annually through increased tourist numbers and additional cast and crew members
Adding to city vibrancy through the Central Market/Chinatown/Victoria Square leisure and entertainment precinct
Complementary to the Adelaide Riverbank entertainment precinct and providing two interlinked leisure and entertainment hubs by developing laneway access and activation
Your consideration to support…
Our contribution to the cost of renewing Her Majesty’s Theatre is $3 million, which we need to raise in the next 3 years, and we would very much appreciate your gift to our Grand Old Dame.
