The Ritz Cinema, Randwick in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs is presenting a special 25th Anniversary Reunion Event of the hilarious Australian comedy breakout-hit, Hercules Returns, on Friday 9th March.Along with film distributor Glass Doll Films, The Ritz will present the film in original 35mm followed by a Q&A with director, producer & cast including Mary Coustas & Bruce Spence plus original Double Take performers Sally Patience & Des Mangan
Hercules Returns was the film version of the hugely popular “dub-parody” live show Double Take, which was created and performed by Des Mangan and Sally Patience.
Mangan and Patience gained a massive following touring around Australia with their live Double Take shows, where they would sit at the back of a cinema performing live comedic voice-overs of B-Grade movies such as sci-fi The Astro Zombies and Roman film Hercules Returns. The filmed version of Hercules Returns actually came about from producer Phil Jaroslow seeing a live performance of Mangan and Patience doing Hercules Returns in Melbourne, and developing it into film form with Mangan, Patience and director David Parker.
The team went on to cast well-known performers Bruce Spence (Mad Max), Mary Coustas (“Effie” from TVs Acropolis Now) plus comedian David Argue & actor Michael Carman. But the real stars of the film, Mangan and Patience, don’t even appear on screen and their voice-overs are mimed by Argue, Spence and Coustas to hilarious results.
The Ritz is extremely excited to bring these talented comedians and filmmakers back to Randwick for one huge event in March. There will be a screening of the film on an original 35mm print, followed by a Q&A with almost the whole creative team including Des Mangan, Sally Patience, Mary Coustas, Bruce Spence, Michael Carman, David Parker, Phillip Jaroslow all live on stage and hosted by SBS Movie Show host Jamie Leonarder.
“This is the type of movie-viewing experience which you just can’t get sitting at home in front of the TV.” says Ritz General Manager, Lachlan McLeod. “A huge cinema packed-full of like-minded people, all laughing and cheering along to one of the most loved Aussie films of the 90s. What could be better!? For those wanting to relive when they saw the film the first time, or just looking for super fun night at the cinema, we can’t wait to host this awesome event for all of them!”
