There are certain shows that you remember long after the curtain drops – the Manganiyar Seduction is one such event. Ever since its rousing success opening the Delhi Film Festival in 2006, the stunning production has brought the music of the Manganiyars – a caste of desert musicians from the heart of the Thar Desert in Rajasthan – to the world.
The show begins with forty musicians seated in red-curtained cubicles arranged in horizontal rows, one on top of the other. A single cubicle is lit up and the first singer begins his song. Soon another cubicle lights up and then another. As the sound gathers momentum, the pods glow and pulsate along with the music in a spectacular display building into a skin-xxxling climax of musical instruments and voice.
The incredible intensity of the show is enhanced by the jewel box-style set. Reminiscent of the Hawa Mahal Palace in Jaipur with the seductive glow of Amsterdam’s red light district, the set combined with the ethereal sounds give you the feeling you’re stepping into another world.
