Be the first to see the highly anticipated film Ladies in Black with an exclusive Q&A prior, featuring the director Bruce Beresford in conversation with The Australian’s managing Editor Helen Trinca, in Sydney this September.

Ladies in Black is set in the summer of 1959, when the impact of European migration and the rise of women’s liberation is about to change Australia forever, Lisa, aged sixteen, takes a holiday job at the prestigious Sydney department store, Goode’s. There she meets the “ladies in black”. Beguiled and influenced by Magda, the vivacious manager of the high-fashion floor, and assisting sales ladies Patty and Fay, Lisa is awakened to a world of possibilities. As she grows from a bookish schoolgirl into a glamorous and positive young woman, the impact they have on each other will change all their lives.

The film is based on the book The Women in Black by Australian author Madeleine St John. Director, Bruce Beresford knew Madeleine through university and Managing Editor of The Australian, Helen Trinca published a biography on Madeleine’s life in 2013.

Before the screening, guests will hear from Beresford in conversation with Helen Trinca.

Bruce Beresford - Director of Ladies in Black
Bruce Beresford was born in Sydney and graduated from the University of Sydney. He worked for the British Film Institute and directed his first feature film, The Adventures Of Barry Mckenzie, in the 1970s. Helen Trinca - Managing Editor of The Australian
Helen Trinca was born in Perth and graduated from the University of Western Australian. Trinca has been a journalist for over 35 years and has worked for a number of publications. She is a well-regarded writer and author of non-fiction books, with her latest on the biography of Madeleine.
