From the director of Return of the Jedi and Jagged Edge, Richard Marquand, comes the 1981 Ken Follett adaptation Eye of the Needle, starring Donald Sutherland, Stephen MacKenna and Kate Nelligan. A wartime thriller of the first order, the gripping story follows a German spy trying to get out of Britain with vital intel about D-Day, forced to spend time with a young woman and her crippled husband. Donald Sutherland is a genuine three-dimensional villain here, who will keep you glued through every twist and turn in this masterly film.
Gary Sinise is so much more than Lieutenant Dan in Forrest Gump. He was one of the founders of the legendary Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago, and also directs and stars in this adaptation of John Steinbeck’s heartbreaking novel, from a screenplay by the legendary Horton Foote (To Kill a Mockingbird, Tender Mercies). Sinise recruited one of Steppenwolf’s major players, John Malkovich to play Lennie alongside his George, and watch out for the likes of Joe Morton, Ray Walston, Sherilyn Fenn, Casey Siemaszko and the late Alexis Arquette in solid support. But the real star here is the story itself, which will have you tearing up every time you watch it. This DVD release is accompanied by deleted scenes, screen tests and an audio commentary!
Last, but certainly not least, is Kevin Costner’s classic multiple Oscar-winning Dances with Wolves, an epic Western with cinematography by Dean Semler and score by John Barry, in a story of Lieutenant John Dunbar (Costner), who befriends wolves and Indians, and challenges the archaic thinking of the US military, and the general population at large. This DVD and Blu-ray release features the original theatrical cut of the film, the director’s cut, audio commentary, and a previously unreleased in Australia featurette ‘Creation of an Epic.’
