The Horne Prize will be given for an essay:
Of exceptional quality
Of no more than 3000 words
Written between Saturday June 22 and Monday September 16, 2019
Addressing some part of the theme ‘Australian Life’, be that a reported feature or a profile centred on a particular issue, or a series of vignettes or something else that explains who we are and how we live. It could be hard news or it could be something softer, so long as it is grounded in interviews and observation.
Entrants need not be published or professional writers, but craft skills of professional calibre are essential. For a benchmark, we suggest reading the winning essays from previous rounds: Anna Spargo-Ryan’s The Suicide Gene; Kerryn Goldsworthy’s The Limit of the World; Daniel James’s Ten More Days; and the work of other prominent contemporary essayists.
Entrants need not be Australian citizens – we seek insights from all writers who have been engaged with or affected by Australian culture.
What we’re not seeking or accepting:
Essays about Donald Horne and his work
Essays that look to the past without using the backward glance to reflect on the present or to consider possibilities for the future
Work written/submitted under a pseudonym
Lyric essays and memoirs that are purely expositional (that is, lacking research and analysis of their subject)
Essays written for school, TAFE or university assignments
Essays that incorporate referencing
Submissions that include artwork, photographs or other images.

The Horne Prize (the Prize)
Terms and Conditions
1.1. By submitting an entry to the Prize, you agree to accept and be bound by the following terms and conditions, and acknowledge that failure to comply with them may result in disqualification. All national and local laws and regulations shall apply.
1.2. Emeis Cosmetics Pty Ltd ACN 007 409 001 (Aesop) and The Saturday Paper Pty Ltd ACN 165 672 579 (TSP) are the Promoters of the Prize (Promoters).

2.1. The Prize will open for submissions at midnight (AEST) on June 22, 2019 (Opening Date). Essay entries will be accepted until midnight (AEST) Monday September 16, 2019 (Closing Date).
2.2. Shortlisted entrants will be notified by the Promoters on November 7, 2019, and their names announced publicly on November 9, 2019. The winning entrant will be notified by the Promoters on December 3 and their name announced publicly on December 21, 2019, simultaneous with publication in The Saturday Paper.
2.3. If the Prize is declined or unclaimed by the winner, or if the winner cannot be contacted within three business days of notification using the details provided, another winner may be selected at the Promoters’ discretion and will be notified by the Promoters. The original winning entrant will then forfeit the Prize and the Prize Sum if the Promoters select another winner.
Entrants
3.1. All employees of Schwartz Media and their families are not eligible to enter.
3.2. All employees of Emeis Holdings Pty Ltd and any of its subsidiaries and their families are not eligible to enter.
3.3. The Promoters will accept multiple submissions per entrant.
3.4. The author must be a single individual; jointly authored essays or essays written by multiple authors will not be accepted.
3.5. Each entrant must provide up to date and accurate contact information when they submit their entry to enable the Promoters to contact them for further information or update on the status of the entry before or after the Closing Date.
3.6. If there is any dispute as to the identity of an entrant, the Promoters reserve the right, in their sole discretion to determine the identity of the entrant.
Entry Requirements
4.1. Entrants are advised to retain a copy of any entry which they submit, as the Promoters are unable to return any submitted entry.
4.2. There is no cost to submit an entry.
4.3. Each entry must include a cover sheet citing the author's name and contact details, and title of the entry.
4.4. Each entry must be:
4.4.1 in English (an English translation of an essay written originally in any other language is eligible);
4.4.2 an original and unpublished work of which the entrant is the author;
4.4.3 between 2500 and 3000 words in length;
4.4.4 submitted via the Prize website (

4.4.5 formatted as a single pdf or Word documentin double-spaced, 12-point font, with numbered pages.
4.5. It is a condition of entry that the winner is able to attend a prize-giving ceremony in Melbourne on or about December 2, 2019. Domestic Australian air travel and accommodation expenses will be met if necessary, where the winning entrant is required to travel from interstate to Melbourne.
4.6. The Promoters accept no responsibility for entry submissions not received for any reason.
4.7. The Promoters reserve the right, at any time, to verify the validity of entrants (including an entrant’s identity a citizenship status, and reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to disqualify any individual who the Promoter has reason to believe has breached any of these Terms and Conditions or engaged in any unlawful or other improper conduct calculated to interfere with the fair and proper conduct of the promotion.
Prize
5.1. The Promoters will award the winning entrant the sum of AUD$15,000 (Prize Sum).
5.2. The Prize Sum will be paid to the winning entrant within 5 business days after the date of publication of the winning entry by electronic funds transfer.
5.3. The winning entrant must provide their bank information or such other information reasonably requested, to the Promoters to facilitate payment of the Prize Sum.
Intellectual Property Rights
6.1. Copyright in each essay entry submitted remains with the author of the entry, subject to this clause 6.
6.2. By submitting an entry to the Prize the winning entrant grants to the Promoters, jointly and severally, a non-exclusive, royalty free, perpetual right to use, publish, reproduce and reprint the Essay (in whole or in part) on a worldwide basis through all media (including print, digital, radio and social media). Without limiting the above, each entrant acknowledges and agrees that this includes:
6.2.1. publication by TSP (print and digital);
6.2.2. publication on Aesop’s website;
6.2.2. publication in a chapbook or similar booklet to be distributed through Aesop’s retail stores.
6.3. Each entrant agrees not to publish their essay in any manner (including print, digital or social media) until after the initial publication of the winning Essay in the summer edition of The Saturday Paper published on December 21, 2019.
6.4. The author of the winning Essay agrees not to publish, in any format, the winning Essay for a period of 12 months after the initial publication of the Essay by TSP on December 21, 2019.
6.5. The Promoters reserve the right to edit the winning entry in respect of publication.
6.6. By submitting an entry to the Prize, each entrant also consents to the Promoters using their name, likeness, image and /or voice in the event they are shortlisted or the winner (including photograph, film and/or recording of the same) in any media for an unlimited period without remuneration for the purpose of promoting the Prize and the Promoters.
Unacceptable Entries.
Entries received after the Closing Date and/or which are not in accordance with the entrant and entry requirements set out in clause 3 and 4 respectively will not be accepted.
Outcome
8.1. The Promoters’ decisions will be final and no correspondence will be entered into in relation to their deliberations, decisions or the Prize.
8.2. Entrants must direct any questions or comments in relation to the Prize to the Promoters at
judges@horneprize.com.au. Entrants must not contact or attempt to contact any of the judges of the Prize.
Warranties
9.1. By submitting an entry, the author warrants to the Promoters that they own all intellectual property rights in their essay entry and, that their essay entry:
9.1.1 is an original, unpublished literary work;
9.1.2 does not infringe the copyright or any other intellectual property rights of any other person;
9.1.3 does not defame or invade the privacy rights of any third party;
9.1.4 does not infringe any other legal rights, regulations or laws.
Events
Events may occur which render the awarding of the Prize impossible due to reasons beyond the control of the Promoters. The Promoters may, at their absolute discretion, vary, amend, suspend or withdraw the Prize or amend these Terms and Conditions with or without notice.
Liability
Except for any liability that cannot by law be excluded including the statutory guarantees under the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 (Cth), the Promoters jointly and severally (including their respective officers, employees and agents) are not responsible for and exclude all liability (including negligence) for any personal injury; or any loss or damage (including loss of opportunity); whether direct, indirect, special or consequential, arising in any way out of: (i) any technical difficulties or equipment malfunction; (b) any theft, unauthorised access or third party interference; (iii) any entry or Prize claim that is late, lost, altered, damaged or misdirected (whether or not after their receipt by the Promoters) due to any reason beyond the control of the Promoter; (d) any variation in the Prize or the Prize Sum to that stated in these Terms and Conditions; (e) any tax liability incurred by the winner or entrant.
Data
12.1. Any information provided in relation to the Prize that constitutes personal information under the Privacy Act 2001 (Cth) will be governed by the TSP Privacy Policy located at
https://www.thesaturdaypaper.com.au/tag/privacy and these Terms and Conditions. All entrants agree to be bound by the TSP Privacy Policy by submitting an entry.
12.2. All entrants who submit an entry to the Prize acknowledge that TSP will provide information from entries to the judging panel and to Aesop for purposes relating to the judging of the Prize, administering of the Prize and Prize Sum and extending invitations to networking and other promotional activities. 13.1. The result of the Prize is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
13.2. The Promoters cannot accept responsibility for or liability arising from participants taking part in the Prize or submitting an entry to the Prize.
13.3. The Promoters give no warranty or guarantee in relation to the Prize and accept no responsibility or liability for the Prize being amended by the Promoters. To the fullest extent permissible by law, the Promoters exclude liability for all loss, damage or claim arising as a result of any participant’s entry into the Prize or use of the Prize.
13.4. These terms and conditions shall be governed by the laws of Victoria, Australia and each entrant submits to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Victoria, Australia and courts of appeal from them.
