Yuli: The Carlos Acosta Story, the incredible biopic of Cuban ballet star Carlos Acosta, from his early years growing up on the streets of Havana to the highs of performing with the English National Ballet, will screen in cinemas nationally from October 31. The film stars Carlos Acosta as himself, looking back over his life and career, and is based on his 2007 autobiography No Way Home.
Nicknamed Yuli by his father Pedro, Carlos Acosta fled any kind of discipline or education from a young age. His father saw in him his immense natural talent as a dancer and forced him to attend Cuba’s National Dance School. Despite his initial disobedience, Yuli ends up being captivated by the world of dance, becoming one of the best dancers of his generation. Breaking taboos, Yuli became the first black artist to dance Romeo in the Royal Ballet in London, where he forged a legendary career as a principal dancer for 17 years.
Yuli: The Carlos Acosta Story is a multilayered story that hits every thematic note – the complicated relationship between father and son, connection to family, maleness, sacrifice, black identity, exile and the transforming power of art. The film also uses contemporary dance pieces to depict key
moments in Carlos’ life, a device that gives another dimension to the story Carlos is trying to tell. The history and culture of Carlos’ homeland of Cuba, provides a rich backdrop to the film.
