They keep themselves warm and waterproof by rubbing their feathers with an oily liquid from their tails. Have fun building this little penguin kit using LEGO pieces!
You are a deep ocean explorer, and you’ve discovered a creature never seen before. It looks unusual, because it has adapted to the extreme cold. For your chance to win one of five kits, describe the adaptation you’ve observed in your imaginary creature.
The Noongar people of the south-west of Western Australia call the little penguin widi, or kulija. The word kulija is believed to be a blend of the words kul (meaning movement) and nija (this), describing penguin tracks!

To be in the running to win one of these fantastic prizes, photograph your entry and email it to
helixassist@csiro.au by 14 October 2021. Include your name, age, address and Double Helix subscriber number*. Get a parent’s permission, and ask them to sign each entry. The best entries in each competition will win.

Entries will be judged on creative merit, not by chance.

Winners will be notified by mail and the names of competition winners only will be published three issues later.
