Title: New Total Prize Value!
Post by: Administrator on Sunday 11 January 2009, 09:48:56 pm
There is now a 'Total Prize value' field you can fill in when you add a competition.

It should make those dollar signs jump right at you!

So when  it says "digits only no commas" and a prize is worth $195.50  would we have to type that as 19550 ???

Just discovered that admin when i posted a comp....love that jumping dollar sign

Another fabulous extra you've added to make this a fun place to belong to.

Thank-you

Just type the numbers without the comma seperator.
You can put in the decimal place if you want to (you don't need to if it's zero cents).

eg:
$2,000.00         type     2000 (or 2000.00)
$2,200.88         type     2200.88
$1,24,567.88     type    1234567.88

If the prize value is unknown, is the field to be left blank or can there be an approximate prize value submitted? For example, the cost of a double adult movie pass is around $30 and there are 10 available;  this would mean that the approximate value would be $300.

Any chance of removing the prize value bit in bold from the indexes? Its a great feature (dont get me wrong) but its not really important to me when searching for comps to enter. Do I have the option of removing the value from the index page and only viewing it in the actual competition post itself?

Sorry if this offends  :(

just a thought, i actually like it and if it does get removed can it be left there until we enter all the amounts. This way we can see which ones don't yet have a dollar amount.

:)

Hi Snuggle1, yeah I think that is fine. I've done that with a couple of the movie ticket ones.  Thanks for your help :D

I think the prize value amount in the indexes is a good idea, like purr-fection, it's a bit superfluous for me, but that doesn't matter.  I can see how it can help in judging exactly what the prize consists of, by it's monetary value. The main thing that I noticed when viewing it was that the orange is very hard for me to read on my laptop.  Again, this probably won't matter to me when I'm back on my other computer with my larger screen. :dontknow:

In saying that, thanks Admin, you're always working to make the forum a better place for compers. :D  All your hard work is greatly appreciated.

I have a computer with a large screen and I cannot read the orange small print... I do feel a lighter colour is preferable to the black as I went cross eyed trying to figure out which was the competition name but yes the orange is invisible!!

My problem is that I don't want to make the extra information stand out like a sore thumb and overpower the actual subject of the post.

Most computer monitors display different shades of colours so it's difficult to select something that's subtle, yet visible.
I'll have a little play around.

What about hot pink?  That works for me and shouldn't interfere with any of the other default colours of the forum, except for standing out like a sore thumb. :)

Must say I'm with the cat on this one... Interesting but somewhat deceptive. After all, prizes can vary with a huge first prize OS trip to movie pass runners-up. Maybe the first prize amount is more relevant?

So here are my suggestions for what they're worth. (I like throwing in the lateral thoughts!...)
~   Narrow down the columns and add a new one for 'major prize value'.
~   Ditto a separate column for 'closing date'. No need for colour differences then.
~   Do we actually need the poster listed on the index page? He/she would still be found on the actual posting.
~   This will free up more vertical space for comps per index page.

Hope I am not upsetting all those who work hard behind the scenes. Your efforts are in fact much appreciated.

I tried using columns instead of adding the information at the bottom of the subject, but when the site is viewed on a small laptop or screen, it looks like an Excell spreadsheet and is hard to read.
Perhaps I will sacrifice the 'Started by' column and see how it goes.

Although there is usually only one closing date, there are some comps that have multiple draws each having a different closing date. It's handy and it helps the mods a lot when they are closing. I'll need to have a re-think about it. I've got some ideas on shortening the displayed information but not sure I can do what I want.

The prize amount displayed should be the total value of the competition. Most promoters list this and it's easier to calculate instead of displaying just individual prize values.
As with almost every competition the odds of winning absolutely everything up for grabs is almost infinite. A larger prize pool generally suggests that there are more chances at winning something.

At this stage, the way I've written the code I could probably create an enable/disable feature so members could revert back to the 'old style', but If I start moving columns around it becomes progressively more difficult to enable/disable.

Thanks for feedback, I'm still working on it.
:)

Dear Administrator,

The way things are - there's always a reason,
Please don't think it's "Pick On You" season.
Appreciate heaps the communication,
However the site ends, it will be... a SENSATION!

Ms Marigold

well i have to admit i like it and i liked it how it was before too..lol..i'm easy..for the mods its extremely useful to have the close dates and value at a glance so we know very quickly if a comp isnt linked to the calendar and if it doesnt have a value yet..

and by moving it over, that solves the issues with too much info under the comp name..

works for me..

lmao..justus..i read your post and stil didnt notice the print button  methinks its time i was off for the night.. or is that morning..

good job admin  this site is looking better every day :D

I must say Admin you have done a marvelous job, the comp name is now easy to read, the poster can still have their glory, the mods can see what they need in a glance and the colour is perfect!!

Is there nothing you can't do? *don't answer that*

Thanks for all your hard work :-)
