The notification system allowed members to be notified by email when someone posted or replied to a topic. Because of the thousands of members that were asked to be notified by email, our mail server was often clogged and prevented new members from receiving their log-in authentication emails. The clog was mainly due to a large number of members who selected to be notified by email but their email box was full. In this case the message would be returned to our server and placed back in the queue to be re-sent at a later time. This eventually causes our mail server to be overloaded with so many messages waiting to be delivered that new members who wanted to join would not receive their authentication email for hours, sometimes days. Consequently, we have had to turn the notification system off. It was something that was designed for a much smaller website and although it is a nice feature to have, it's completely unsuitable for a website of this size. |
