By the end of 1942, Sigi’s parents and 167 members of his extended family had been exterminated in the death camps of Treblinka, Belzac and Auschwitz. Sigi himself was first enslaved in the labour camp at Skarzysko-Kamienna and later at Czestochowa; it was here that he met the love of his life, Hanka. Now resident in Melbourne, it has taken Sigi six decades to share his story of adventure, death, pain and love. The Thirty Six – a title inspired by the Kabbalah – shares his miraculous survival and the good and bad he saw of life and humanity in Poland during World War II. The Australian Jewish News has two copies of The Thirty Six, each signed by the author, to give away. Competition entries close on Monday, September 13.
