Puzzled
Puzzled is a memoir of a life lost in words as well as a revealing guide to the deepest mysteries of crossword and other word puzzles. More than a how-to manual, more than a memoir, Puzzled enlightens us about cryptics and delights in the quirky realm of wordplay. It is a book for word junkies everywhere.

The competition closes 30 November 2010.

The winning entries will be notified in writing and by phone and be announced online here in December 2010.

1. Information on how to enter and the prize form part of these Conditions of Entry.

2. The Promoter is Allen & Unwin Pty Ltd (A.B.N 79 003 994 278) of 83 Alexander Street, Crows Nest, NSW 2065.

3. A purchase of a specially stickered copy of Puzzled by David Astle during the competition period entitles a person to enter the ‘Win 1 of 4 wordsmith prize packs’ competition. Entry is open to Australian residents only. Employees of Allen & Unwin Pty Ltd, anyone else connected to Allen & Unwin, and their immediate families are ineligible to enter. Eligible people (Entrants) who enter online at www.allenandunwin.com/competitions in accordance with these Conditions of Entry will be eligible to win. Four (4)  Entrants will be selected as winners.

4. To enter, a person must complete the ‘Win 1 of 4 wordsmith prize packs’ competition online entry form in full on the Allen and Unwin website www.allenandunwin.com/competitions during the competition period and retain their original proof of purchase (receipt) which will need to be produced by the winner. Only one (1) entry per purchase is allowed.

5. The entry submitted will be taken as the Entrant’s acceptance of assigning all rights and interests including but not limited to copyright and all other intellectual property rights of the Entrant’s to Allen & Unwin. Allen & Unwin reserves the right to edit or alter the Entrant’s submission.

6. Each prize pack consists of a 12 month subscription to the Australian or New Zealand newspaper of the entrant’s choice (for delivery up to six days per week), plus a reference library that includes one copy of each of the following titles:

7. No portion of the prize is redeemable for cash.

8. The prize will be awarded to the entrant who, in the opinion of the judges, provides the best cryptic clues for the answers ‘monotreme’, ‘last supper’ and ‘utter’ in 25 words or less.

9. Competition commences 00:01 (AEST) on 25/08/2010. Entries close 5.00pm (AEST) on 30/11/2010 (the Competition period). Any entry received after that date will be ineligible. Entry by any person will be taken as acceptance of these Terms and Conditions. There will be one prize draw which will be conducted at 10.00am (AEST) on 10/12/2010 at the Promoter’s office. The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

10. The winning entry will be notified in writing and by phone and be announced online on www.allenandunwin.com/competitions by 20/12/2010.

11. The winner must produce their original proof of purchase (receipt itemising Puzzled) to be eligible to claim the prize. If the winner fails to produce their original proof of purchase they forfeit the prize.

12. If the winner of a prize is under the age of 18 years, the prize will be awarded to the winner's nominated parent or guardian.

13. The Promoter shall not be liable for any loss or damage whatsoever which is suffered (including but not limited to indirect or consequential loss) or for personal injury which is suffered or sustained, as a result of taking the prize, except for any liability which cannot be excluded by law.

14. Allen & Unwin will not accept responsibility for late entries, ailed, partial or garbled computer transmissions, or for technical failures of any kind, including but not limited to electronic malfunction or damage of any network, hardware or software. Entries that are forged, incomplete, illegible or do not comply with the terms and conditions will be deemed invalid. If for any reason this Competition is not capable of running as planned, including infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorised intervention, fraud, technical failures, or other causes that corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity or proper conduct of this Competition, Allen & Unwin reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to disqualify any individual who tampers with the entry process, and to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend this Competition. No responsibility is assumed for: any error, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, delay in operation or transmission, communications line failure, theft or destruction or unauthorised access to, or alteration of, entries; or any problems or technical malfunctions of any telephone network or lines, computer online systems, servers, or providers, computer equipment, software, failure of any e-mail or electronic entry to be received on account of technical problems or traffic congestion on the Internet or at any web site, or any combination thereof, including any injury or damage to Entrant’s or any other person’s computer related to or resulting from participation in or downloading any materials from this Competition. In the event of a dispute over an electronic entry, prize will be awarded to the name on the Entry Form and Release, not the owner of the e-mail account.

15. Allen & Unwin may conduct such further judging as is necessary on 15 January 2011 in order to distribute any prize unclaimed by that date, or if the original winner is deemed ineligible. If a re-draw is required, the winner will be notified by phone or mail.

16. The Promoter collects entrant’s personal information in order to conduct the promotion. If the information requested is not provided, the entrant may not participate in the promotion. Allen & Unwin respects your privacy. Your personal details will only be used for the purpose of this promotion unless you nominate otherwise.
