Win copies of  Miami Horror's Illumination

Their sound has been described as wide-screen pop with disco flourishes.  It’s been described as relentlessly retro sunshine electro.  But whether you know them as the brainchild of softly spoken Melbourne producer Ben Plant or as the band with the catchy synth-driven track behind the latest Optus commercial, it’s undeniable that dance floor destroyers Miami Horror are destined for big things.  Having just returned from a month-long tour of the US, Plant spoke to Student Edge before taking the stage at Perth’s One Movement Music Festival.

It was originally intended to be an enjoyable side-project for Plant, but since transforming into a four-piece band, Miami Horror has become one of Australia’s most influential dance acts this year.  The debut album, Illumination, came out in August and is proving to be the perfect summer soundtrack - which is somewhat appropriate given that light was always the intended direction.  “Light spawned everything.  Everything came from illumination,” explains Plant.  “There’s underlying themes of light which is fairly noticeable in the names of things and the lyrics.”

The album’s sound is slightly different to that which was formerly associated with the band.  Drawing inspiration from artists like Pink Floyd and Supertramp, it’s an intricate mix of floaty ambient overtones and shoe-shuffling bass lines.  “Musically, there was a lot of experimentation and focus on creating something different to what we’d already done,” Plant says, adding that the album’s subtle disco influences came from his soft spot for the genre.

After finding that he had 50 different versions of the single Moon Theory in his iTunes, Plant says the main focus of Illumination was to keep it simple.  The self-professed perfectionist said it’s a trait which he has found to be both useful and detrimental to his music.  He’d reworked the track each time, trying to find the perfect blend of musical elements.  “That was just laughable.  I couldn’t believe that I’d exported 50 different versions,” he muses.  “Being a perfectionist ... as long as you know where to stop it’s okay.”

The former film student also hopes to bring his amateur cinematic interests into the live show mix soon but it’s a time-consuming process.  “We’ve had it in the back of our heads for a while but to get a projection thing happening with a lot of interesting visuals takes a lot of time,” he says.  “Now that we’ve actually built up a lot of elements from the album art and videoclips, we’re going to get a guy to put a lot of it together and add some new things.”

He leaves us with some final words of wisdom before going to get ready for the night’s antics:  “If you really want to achieve what you want to achieve you just have to be disciplined enough to do it and you have to work hard.”

Student Edge have copies of Illumination to giveaway, all you have to do is tell us what your ultimate video clip would be.
