Title: Win 1/5 copies of Hungry Kids of Hungary's Escapades, mbrs ans q Post by: LilyL on Tuesday 02 November 2010, 05:57:57 pm (http://studentedge.com.au/StudentEdge/media/Images/Blogs/Article/08d46c56-7e97-4c19-9fb3-b31d84e6d880coming_around_hungry_kids_of_hungary_album%20web.jpg)
http://studentedge.com.au/Blog.aspx?BlogId=338 Win 1/5 copies of Hungry Kids of Hungary's Escapades Though their name might suggest otherwise, the Hungry Kids of Hungary are not a charity, nor are they Hungarian…but sometimes, they do get hungry. The Hungry Kids of Hungary are actually an extremely talented up and coming band out of Brisbane and as lead singer Dean McGrath explains, their name was just a joke to begin with. “A friend suggested Hungry Kids of Hungary – half jokingly that is. But it was better then anything else we had come up with, so, we kind of just went with it - there is something about it that just sort of fits with us. It’s definitely a name to remember,” Dean says. The band consists of Dean McGrath, lead singer and guitarist, Kane Mazlin, keyboardist and vocals, Ryan Strathie on drums and Ben Dalton on bass. They formed in 2007 and had their first big break as the Queensland winners of the 2008 Triple J Unearthed competition. The Hungry Kids of Hungary music is best described as fun and energetic Indie-pop, with influences from 60’s and 70’s pop-rock icons like the Beatles and the Beach Boys. “We all grew up listening to our parent’s record collections. We have a pretty broad musical taste between the four of us so and I think a lot of the stuff we listen to creeps into our music one way or another,” Dean says. Dean adds however, “Indie-pop music defines us but we just make the music we want to make, we don’t like to restrict ourselves.” The band has just releases their debut album called Escapades that features earlier songs such as their debut single from 2008, Set It Right and hit 2009 song, Scattered Diamonds. Dean says he likes how the album covers the bands music history. “Its got some of our older songs while there are some songs on there that are really new that have only been around for a couple of months. It’s nice that it kind of covers that much distance and that much time. It’s very comprehensive on what we have done.” The album is without doubt one of the best albums releases by an Australian band this year with its mix of happy hooks, melodies, harmonies and dreamy ballads. The versatility of their song writing shines through and as Dean says there is no serious message to the album – it’s just meant to make people feel happy about life. Some highlights on the album include Let You Down and the very upbeat and catchy WristWatch. A stand out song is definitely the You Ain’t Always There, which is my personal favourite. The album also features The Window Shopper which sounds similar to The Shins style of music, highlighting their versatility and as Dean adds is a really great song to round out the album. Dean says the bands favourite songs on the album are always changing as they are all pretty close to their hearts. However for Dean the song Eat Your Heart Out holds quite a bit of importance. “Its just one of those songs where it really just turned out the way that I hoped it would. I had a vision on how it was going to sound and we managed to pull it off exactly the way I wanted it. So that was really rewarding for me.” The album also features their newest release Coming Around which is based on a couple’s rough relationship. The inspiration for the creative and fun video clip came from a Michael Douglas film. “There’s a movie called The War of the Roses. There’s a huge domestic fight between this couple in it and a bit of inspiration of our video clip came from that. So we just through ourselves in the middle of a fighting couple and coped the brunt of it!” So far the band has toured with fellow Unearthed winners Philadelphia Grand Jury and Washington. They have also toured with Oh Mercy, Jamie T, Little Birdy, OK Go and have played various festivals like Falls Festival, Southbound and One Movement. Dean says touring and meeting so many bands has been an amazing experience. “The nicest part about the tours is the people we have played with. Everyone that we have met along the way has been really accommodating and happy to get to know us – making friends is the best thing about touring.” For the rest of the year the Hungry Kids of Hungary will be touring all around Australia promoting Escapades while playing a few festivals over the summer. They hope to head overseas next year. After that, their plans are “a bit of an open book”. “We are happy to enjoy what happens to us from day to day. Hopefully we will still be making music and having a lot of fun.” Student Edge has five copies of Escapades to give away. If you would like a copy, tell us what your best funky band name would be.
