Just email perth.win@rightanglestudio.com.au with the subject ‘Too many Adz on commercial TV'. Print Email Share It seems that Sufjan Stevens has abandoned his ambitious fifty states project. That is, unless Adz is some new U.S. state I haven't heard of yet. Google maps says it ain't a place, but if it were, Adz would be one banging location to visit; schizophrenic, crowded and strangely beautiful. The Age of Adz marks a new direction in Sufjan's songwriting. Whilst the impeccably crafted pop songs are still there, instead of being gently supported by playful arrangements, the vocal lines are buried beneath dense layers of electronic bleeps, choral sweeps and heaps of traditional orchestration. 'Out with the old and in with the new' Sufjan seems to be saying as he attempts to break apart the tired, worn out chorus-verse-chorus pop-song format and fish out the goodies to reconstitute it as something new and slightly weird. The tightrope walked between coherence and chaos on Adz is what makes the album so darn exciting to listen to. While it falters a couple of times, the album keeps its balance 'til its breathtaking end. By Timothy Fawcett Genre: Pop Release: Album Keywords: Spunk Records, Warped Pop, Sufjan Stevens |
