When I was asked to review the new autobiography by John Howard, titled Lazarus Rising, I have to admit I was a little hesitant. While I follow politics a bit, I can’t say that I am a political expert. So, I decided to approach it from another angle and read it as John Howards’ life story. I find other people’s stories quite interesting and really enjoy finding out about how they ended up on the path they did and this book, Lazarus Rising was no exception. It surprised me.

How John Howard got involved in politics and his journey through life and his motivations is interesting and I am not going to give anything away, suffice to say that sometimes just being in a certain place at a certain time can define someone’s life. Plus it is the first time in a long time that I have read someone’s autobiography and could almost hear them speak.

I am not going to say whether I agree or disagree with some of the versions of events in his political life as John Howard has told it from his perspective and I feel that everyone has their own version of events and see and hear things differently to the next person. However, I will now think about taking on the challenge and read books written by others such as Peter Costello to hear their side of the story.

John Howard was in politics for a long time during my life and decisions that were made while he was in government affected my life and the lives of many around me, so to read how and why certain decisions were made was insightful and shed a bit extra light on many events that caused a lot of controversy.

Now I have to warn you, if you are going to read this book, be prepared it is not a light read and it is a rather large tome – 674 pages! But take your time and have a go at it even if you are not overly political, read it as a story of someone’s life. ~ review by Heather Winchcomb
