Fashion Less Waste - Instructions for entrants 2011

Our annual Fashion Less Waste design competition aims to encourage a more sustainable fashion industry – to help fashion a less wasteful world.

Design and make
Design and make an outfit that is entirely, or mostly, made from materials that were originally bought and used for a non-clothing purpose. You could use, for example, discarded DVDs, video or audio tape, chicken wire, fly screen, wall paper, tea towels, kitchenware, cutlery, plastic bags, hessian bags, office supplies, polystyrene packing, or car seat belts. The use of materials that aren’t curb-side recyclable, or that are notorious for harming animals as litter will be thought of highly.

Before you start, seek inspiration from the family Paradisaeidae, the birds of paradise! Browse books and websites for early ideas. Let the shapes, colours, textures and movements of these stunning birds influence your design in clearly visible ways. Your outfit should strongly and obviously express your support for a more sustainable fashion industry, and your appreciation for these ostentatious, glamorous birds.

An exhibition about the birds of paradise opens at the Australian Museum on 9 April, in time to provide inspiration and information that will help you to preen your entry as the competition closing date of 21 April draws near. Of course too, some fast workers could start an entry only after visiting the exhibition, and still be able to hatch an entry in time!

Pay attention to the very top of your outfit... In 2011, there will be an extra prize in each category for the best accessory hat!

The Australian Museum presents the Fashion Less Waste design competition. Find out more about the terms and conditions of entry.

An entry form must be submitted to the Australian Museum, along with the entry and fee (as a cheque or money order) before the competition closes.
Each entrant can only submit one outfit/entry. A maximum of two people can submit an entry together. Where two people have submitted an entry, any awarded prize money will be shared equally amongst them.
The outfit must be designed and made by the person/people named on the entry form.
The competition is not open to Australian Museum employees, or to members of their immediate family.
The competition is open to entrants from all Australian states and territories. However, entrants must be able to attend the parade of finalist entries at the Museum at their own expense.
All four photographs should be 10 X 15 cms (or 4 X 6 inches) in size and marked legibly on the back with your name and category.
The details on your entry form will only be used for the purposes of this competition and the related promotion. Your private information will not be given to any individual or organisation other than the Australian Museum without your prior permission.
Your photographs will be returned by the Museum only if you include a correctly stamped and self-addressed envelope.
Those entrants who are selected as finalists will be notified by phone and email. Their place as a finalist will only be secured and announced once they have confirmed their attendance at the parade.
The Museum is unable to arrange or fund your travel to the Museum with your outfit for the parade.
The judges’ choices will be final, and no correspondence about the choices will be entered into.
The Australian Museum may use the photographs of the finalists’ entries in media for promotional purposes associated with this and any future related competitions. Copyright and intellectual property of the photographs remains the property of the creator. The Australian Museum may put the awarded or finalist outfits on temporary public display.
The Australian Museum cannot accept liability for any loss of or damage to finalists’ outfits during the parade at the Museum, or during travel to or from the Museum. The Museum will take all reasonable care to safeguard outfits whilst they are in its custody, including whilst on public display at the Museum or the Strand Arcade.
The Museum cannot arrange or fund the return of the awarded outfits at the end of their public display. The awarded entrants will be given at least a fortnight’s notice of the last date of display, and can contact Jane Johnston, Education Officer, to arrange a time in a given two-day period in which their winning outfits can be picked up.
