BEGINS 13/1/11 - ENDS 14/1/11 Competitions WIN! John Cassavetes – The Collection boxed set DVD by Suzan Ryan on Jan.12, 2011, under Competitions, Web Exclusives Shock DVD and Australian Penthouse offer 12 readers the chance to win a 7 DVD combo pack of director John Cassavetes’ most memorable films: Faces; A Woman Under The Influence; Opening Night; The Killing Of A Chinese Bookie; Shadows; and A Constant Forge, valued at RRP $76.99 each John Cassavetes – The Collection Actor-director-writer John Cassavetes is famous for the unpolished and honest urban dramas he wrote and directed in the 1970s. A Woman Under The Influence, Opening Night and The Killing Of A Chinese Bookie (original release and director’s cut) all appear in this boxed set of Cassavetes’ films, as does Shadows (1959) and Faces (1968). John Cassavetes’ work has been held up as an early crucible of America’s independent cinema scene. Cassavetes forged a path for American independent cinema which spawned some of the greats. Frequently dubbed “the actor’s director”, Cassavetes’ films are renowned for their contradictory “liberated fastidiousness” which allowed the visionary director to capture raw, beautiful emotion in its most organic form. His perfectly flawed characters convey a humanity characterised by compassion, benevolence and warmth, selflessly presented with every human imperfection proudly on display. The resultant cinematic genius illustrates precisely why John Cassavetes has earned the title of “the father of independent film”. The five films included here represent his self-financed works made outside the studio system of Hollywood, on which he was afforded complete control. Shock Home Entertainment is proud to present Shadows, Faces, A Woman Under the Influence, The Killing of a Chinese Bookie, and Opening Night in stunning new transfers. This boxed set also contains the documentary A Constant Forge: The Life and Art of John Cassavetes by Charles Kiselyak and two versions on Killing of a Chinese Bookie, the original 135 minute cut and a subsequent 108 minute re-edit.
