Tell Us Your Favourite Big Day Out Moment, Win A Prize!

Hey, festival fans! As we hurtle toward what looks to be another spectacular Big Day Out in 2011, I thought it might be rather nice to look back at Big Day Outs of yesteryear and reminisce about some of our favourite moments. Sometimes the thing that makes a festival seem absolutely wondrous happens on stage during a performance, but not always. Maybe you met your soul mate while waiting to buy a hotdog! Perhaps you ran into Courtney Love while lining up to use the toilets? Or maybe you took a fantastic photo or some great footage of an artist you really love giving it their all on stage?

As I write this, I find myself thinking of some of the Big Day Outs I've attended over the years. I went to my first Big Day Out in 1997 and saw some of my favourite bands like Soundgarden, Supergrass, and You Am I. That was a pretty special Big Day Out as far as I'm concerned, even though I ended up getting severely sunburned due to the fact I forgot to wear sunscreen or bring a hat (learn from my mistakes, kids!)

In 1999, after spending my mid-teen years obsessing over them, I finally saw Ash performing live. Sure, some sweaty fat dude with long hair ended up kicking me in the face as he surfed the crowd, but what did I care? I THINK TIM WHEELER MAY HAVE FLICKED SOME SWEAT ONTO ME. That was the same year Hole dragged a couple of the Hoodoo Gurus on stage to perform a cover of "Bittersweet". Bless your cotton socks, Courtney.

In 2001 I stood with my best friend and soaked up the sunshine as we listened to an up and coming British band called Coldplay performing songs from their first album in the middle of the day. Who knew they'd end up becoming one of the most successful bands in the world? And in 2008 I felt the earth literally shaking as tens of thousands of people jumped up and down in unison as Rage Against The Machine belted out "Killing In The Name Of". Amazing.

What's your best Big Day Out memory? Tell us a good story, and you could win a Big Day Out CD prize pack featuring music from various performers at this year's festival! If you want to submit YouTube footage or a photo along with your tale, email bigdayoutblog@gmail.com.

We'll publish some of our favourites on the Big Day Out blog, and the very best story (or perhaps the story told best...) will score the prize!
