In the footsteps of Mawson

By Ella Richmond

Imagine yourself on Mawson's expedition for your chance to follow his footsteps as a part of the commemorative flotilla.

100 years ago Douglas Mawson set sail to Antarctica on the Australian Antarctic Expedition.

He and his fellow expeditioners including photographer Frank Hurley and Captain John King Davis left Hobart on the 2nd of December 1911.

Imagine how the crew would have felt? What were they leaving behind? Where were they going? What did they expect to achieve?

On the 2nd of December we celebrate the centenary of Mawson's expedition, as ships set sail from Hobart to Antarctica in a re-enactment of the expedition.

We are giving five listeners and a friend the chance to travel on the Cartela as a part of the Mawson commemorative flotilla, accompanying Antarctic ships down the Derwent River to the Iron Pot on December 2, 2011.

We want you to tell us what you think they were feeling.

Write a diary entry as though you are an expeditioner, a crew member, a stowaway or Mawson himself.

Describe what is happening, who you are and how you are feeling as you leave Hobart.
Entries close on the 25th of November.

Fill out the form below with all your details and a 300 word or less diary entry.
