This is a review. I wasn’t paid with money, only popcorn, softdrink and the chance to laze around in a recliner for an hour and a half while watching the movie. It’s also a giveaway, so keep reading for your chance to win.

Words. They have power. They can make a day or break a day. They can build confidence or they can tear you down. Sometimes it’s hard to find the right words. Sometimes there is just far too many words. When my first child was born I missed hearing words. These days, words can be annoying, like when my daughter thinks that saying please a hundred times will let her get what she wants or when my son says “bub bub bub bub bub bub bub” ad nausea just because he can.

Do you ever wish people would just stop talking?

On Tuesday last week Nuffnang Australia and Roadshow Entertainment treated me to a DVD screening of “The Artist”. I absolutely adored it. It was an hour and a half of bliss. Why? Well apart from it being at Gold Class (can anybody say ‘luxury’?), ‘The artist’ is a silent movie.

I know right, a silent movie? Back in the ‘old days’, before kids, two and a half years ago, I might have thought silent movies were lame. These days I relish in a little bit of time without talking. Even then I know I would have enjoyed this movie if I had given it a chance. It has such a lovely, moving soundtrack, it is well made, it is very very funny and it really sucks you in to another world. That’s probably why it won five academy awards. It’s also got John Goodman (not as the main actor but he has a big role. You can almost “hear” him yelling.

Set in the twilight of the silent movie era ‘The Artist’ takes you on one man’s journey. George is the cream of the crop of silent movie actors but when his producers say that the entertainment industry is moving to “talkies” (talking pictures) his world is thrown upside down. He will not star in a talking movie. Initially he is so resilient as his world crumbles around him but eventually he is dragged down into a pit of despair and helplessness. Will he claw his way out? Will it have anything to do with the gorgeous young actress who has her eye on him?

This movie has you hooked from start to finish. The body language, expression and stage presence of the actors is remarkable. The music compliments it perfectly. It’s amazing how much you can get across with facial expression, music, dance and body language. There’s the occasional text board for added emphasis, so if you’re worried about missing the pivotal moments don’t be. Unless you’re idiotically trying to tweet through the event as I was, because a few others were and I was trying to be ‘cool’… Facepalm… Fortunately I had Corey sitting beside me to fill me in. I also have a copy of the DVD to watch over and over again whenever I like.

The artist is out now on DVD and blueray for you to rent or buy. You also have the option to download a digital copy.
