Village Roadshow
Wings at War.
 
For anyone that knows  of the  flying during World War 11, this  DVD  called Wings at War may bring back for some people, vivid memories  that have been told to them by  family members.
As the film featured is taken from the old archives,  it is in black and white and quite graphic.
It  captures all the drama as it transports the viewer  back to the conflicts from the Battle of Britain to the war in the Far  East.
There are four episodes  and approx four sections in each episode, showing not only the air power, but  also covering sea power and shows how people  tried to cope on the ground, especially the English in their air raid shelters and camping  down in the  train subways.
Once we start seeing the conflict  spreading to other country’s, it becomes quite horrifying when you see people trying to flee, and then  hear how many people  perished during this terrible war.
Narrated by John Billam, this collection is a comprehensive account of air warfare in World War 11, and covers the time right up to the Japanese surrender.

The Two Ronnies

Always enjoyable The Two Ronnies are back with Series 10
Who realized that when this comedy team first appeared,  that the series would run for 16 years and become part of British television history?
This series 10 was broadcast in the UK between December 1983 and January 1984.
In the six episodes we have classic 'Two Ronnies' material  including Godfrey and Humphrey at their gentlemans club,
and a hilarious sketch where they are trying to look and talk like Australians.
Several musical numbers again with Ronnie Corbett  doing a  very good Boy George  impersonation.
Lots of laughs with  this very funny comedy duo.

Going for Gold
 
 A new release this year from the BBC,  'Going for Gold” is based on a true story  of  how two men from
very different backgrounds were paired together to  compete in the double sculling rowing competition
representing England in the 1948 Olympic games held in London.
These games were almost  not able to  go ahead, as the war  had not long ended and England was really
strapped for cash, so the officals had to cast around to find events that would attract lots of  visitors.
Bert Bushnell (Matt Smith) was a boatbulders son, whereas Dickie Burnell (Sam Hoare) was an Eton and Oxford
 educated blue blood.
Thrown together  only six weeks before the games they had to confront and overcome vast differences in their
personal and professional lives,  as well as push themselves to their physical and emotional limits.
 
The film follows the compelling journey to the Olympic finals and  how the unlikely pair managed to overcome
 their differences to achieve Olympic Gold.
 I quite enjoyed this film, but  as Matt Smith also  plays the part of Doctor Who, in that long running Science
 
Fiction series,  I found it hard not to keep seeing him and hearing  his voice as the Doctor, even though he
wore dark rimmed glasses in the part of Bert, it did not disguise him enough for me.
 A good release to coincide with the present games.
