The girls and I really enjoy Halloween. The dressing up and the trick or treating (really just treating ) with our neighbours is a couple of hours of giggles and fun. We don’t do the dark side or scary side of Halloween and we dress up as fairies, princesses and last year Miss C was Minnie Mouse and I am not a fan of scary movies. When I was a kid the gremlins scared me and even now the ads on TV for poltergeist scare me and I will change the channel. With the Halloween fun only a couple of weeks away, and outfits being picked I got to enjoy a warm up for the day with a not so scary movie for adults and had a little spooktacular giggle! The not so scary movie but more of a comedy is Dark Shadows, starring Johnny Depp and Michelle Pfeiffer. ”In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet–or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy…until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive. Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets.” This movie is definitely not scary and this is coming from a chicken, but it is definitely not for kids. It is rated M and I probably would only let teens 15-16+ watch it as there are ghosts and there is blood and a bit of gore. It is more of a comedy but features vampires, werewolves, witches and all that is associated with them. I really enjoyed the movie and had quite a few giggles at lines like these…. “What I have I told you about cutting holes in the sheets, they’re Egyptian cotton” I particularly loved the part where Barnabas is released from his coffin into a new world he hasn’t seen before and how he reacts to this new world of lights, music, cars and toys like trolls and the Operation board game. I also thought it was very amusing when Johnny Depp aka Barnabas tries to find the ideal place to sleep, from the drapes to the linen cupboard.
