Kicking off April 18, the ACMI will present a six day program around the accomplished filmography of the influential director, Marco Bellocchio, whose career spans five decades. The season includes the Australian premiere of his new film, Dormant Beauty (pictured), as well as the director’s cut of his 1971 classic In the Name of the Father. Alongside these will screen Vincere and Good Morning, Night. Bellocchio’s latest film, Dormant Beauty debuted at the Venice Film Festival last year amidst controversy. In the lead-up to the festival, the film encountered ire from parties over the subject matter of euthanasia and more loosely, the death of Eluana Englaro in 2009 which galvanised Italian society, facing condemnation which included finance cuts. Dormant Beauty – which presents a mosaic of several intertwined stories – has since received the Critics Award at Sao Paulo and screened at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival.
