The passes entitle the winners to free entry to all City Hall events on Saturday and Sunday, except for the intensive crime writing and poetry workshops.

The festival program features a colourful and interesting range of prominent writers such as Wendy Harmer, Hugh Mackay, Garry Disher, Linda Jaivin, Clare Wright and Kate Forsyth.

Topics include the centenary of World War I, motherhood, memoir, blogging, Aussie music, Nathan Tinkler and the art of making fiction.

There is something for everyone – readers and budding writers alike.

There are also a number of respected Hunter Region writers included in the program and topics of local interest.

Radical Newcastle, which is supported by the University of Newcastle, features leading historians who will share their stories about the fascinating cast of communists, heritage activists and churchmen who are part of the city’s colourful past.

While City Hall is the main festival hub, there are events at Newcastle Art Gallery, Agosti Cafe, The Press Book House Cafe, Reserve Wine Bar and The Edwards cafe and restaurant.
