Best known for lacing his films with a cynical wit, director Jason Reitman (Juno, Up In The Air, Young Adult), changes gear with Labor Day, an earnest and soulful adaptation of Joyce Maynard’s 2009 novel. The film’s told from the perspective of 13-year-old Henry (Changeling’s Gattlin Griffith), who lives a quiet existence with his depressed single mum, Adele (Kate Winslet). Their lives, however, are rocked by the arrival of Frank (Josh Brolin), an escaped prisoner, who confronts them in a grocery store and quietly forces them to take him home. Soon, Frank’s tender side emerges, and Henry and Adele are hoping that he’ll stay...
