Here at Inside Sport, we understand the power of the moustache. This is because we have made scientific study of the correlation between facial hair and elite sporting success. We have forensically examined the extravagant plumage of Gen Y. We have scrupulously investigated the manscaping manners of Gen X. And we have come to the indisputable conclusion: our nation’s proud sporting success (at least among the men!), on which all current glories are founded, is based on an era when the greats of Australian sport proudly wore soup-strainers.

How can it be otherwise? Back in the ‘70s and ‘80s, the bushy mo was iconic. Before cricketers wore helmets, they wore the moustache. Before footballers ever faced a pinch test, they let their top lips go to seed. Moustaches have darkened their competitive sneers and framed their winning smiles for decades. And we won everything.

To celebrate the Mighty Mo, we invite you to step back in time.

Pictured above are 12 of the most famous mos in Australian sporting history. Listed underneath them are the names of their owners.

Competition is open to Australian residents only. Starts 00.01 AEST 14 December, 2015 and ends 23:59 AEST 14 January, 2016. This is a game of skill; entrants must correctly match the 12 selected mos with their famous Australian owners, and also tell us in 20 words or less who has the best mo at the moment in Australian sport. The most colourful and humorous responses will win. Two winners will each receive one Harvey Norman Shaving Pack, which includes a Philips AquaTouch Wet and Dry Electric Shaver. Entries will be judged on 15 January, 2016 at nextmedia Level 6, 207 Pacific Hwy, St Leonards NSW 2065. The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
