IT IS 1962, and pleasantly plump Baltimore teen Tracy Turnblad has only one desire – to be on television dancing on the popular Corny Collins Show.

When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star.

But she must use her newfound power to vanquish the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin and integrate a television network – all without denting her 'do.

Hairspray the Big Fat Arena Spectacular will bounce into Newcastle Entertainment Centre on Friday, July 15 and Saturday, July 16.

There will be only three performances staged at Newcastle Entertainment Centre – one on Friday night (7.30pm) and two on Saturday (2pm and 7.30pm).

The large-scale production stars theatre legend Simon Burke as Edna Turnblad, singer and actress Christine Anu as Motormouth Maybelle, mesmerising dance man Wayne Scott Kermond as Wilbur Turnblad and House Husbands’ Tim Campbell as Corny Collins.

Showbiz doyenne Amanda Muggleton stars as Velma Von Tussle, X Factor finalist Barry (Southgate) Conrad as Seaweed, Dan Venz as Link Larkin and Lauren McKenna as Tracy Turnblad.

The core cast of 30 professional performers will be supported by an amateur ensemble of more than 500 young local performers ranging from ages nine to 21 years.

The ensemble cast also features the talents of Port Stephens actors, singers and dancers, including Tanilba Bay teenager Hunter Stevens.

Produced by Harvest Rain, Hairspray the Big Fat Arena Spectacular  will be directed and choreographed by Callum Mansfield (Dirty Dancing, The King and I, Cats Arena Spectacular).

Musical direction is by Dennett Hudson, design by Josh McIntosh and lighting design by Trudy Dalgleish.

Tickets, available from Ticketek or by phoning 132 849, start at $69.

The Examiner has two double passes (one pass has two tickets) to give away to the Friday, July 15 show.

The Friday show starts at 7.30pm.

To win a pass, send your name and daytime contact details in an email titled “Hair” to ewatts@fairfaxmedia.com.au.

Winners will be notified by 5pm on Wednesday, July 6.
