Win an in-season double pass to the ST. ALi Italian Film Festival

Palace’s annual celebration of Italian cinema is back, showcasing an outstanding selection that celebrate’s the country’s language, stories and culture. The ST. ALi Italian Film Festival returns to Palace Barracks and Palace James Street from September 27 to October 25, presenting an eclectic mix of Italian films and documentaries, plus a retrospective of beloved Italian cinema legend Massimo Troisi.

Opening the festival is the Australian premiere of The Last Night of Amore (L’ultima nottedi Amore) – an Italian box-office hit starring the incomparable Pierfrancesco Favino. The Milan-set thriller follows a police lieutenant who is drawn into a web of crime and corruption on the eve of his retirement.

This year’s festival centrepiece is Marco Bellocchio’s Kidnapped (Rapito), fresh from the Cannes Film Festival. Based on true events, the gripping historical drama is the story of a young Jewish boy whose abduction by the Vatican fuelled outrage in 19th-century Italy and triggered a global scandal. Also from Cannes is captivating fable of lost love La Chimera and multi-layered new comedy A Brighter Tomorrow (Il sol dell’avvenire).

Celebrating his 30-year career in Italian cinema, the 2023 festival will present a retrospective of the great Massimo Troisi. Three of his most significant films will be screened – his debut in the humorous and heartfelt I’m Starting From Three (Ricomincio da tre), comedic adventure Nothing Left To Do But Cry (Non ci resta che piangere), and ode to themagic of cinemagoing, Splendor.
