AOTW Giveaway: Georgia Knight

Beanpole is the striking debut from Melbourne/Naarm artist Georgia Knight. It marks a shift from her folk roots into what she calls “musically dark terrain and cinematic breadth”. Trip-hop pulses, tape-scuffed textures and layered synths are all shaped into shadowy, slow-burning pop.

The album took shape across multiple locations with a tight collective of musicians. In Tasmania, Knight worked out early ideas in Jethro Pickett's studio, exploring her newly acquired autoharp instrument. At Soundpark Studios, producer Andrew 'Idge' Hehir helped build these sketches into fuller pieces, bringing in Nick Finch's bass lines, Holly Thomas's drums, and Rosie Noyes's pump organ.

The three singles chart the album's emotional range. "Desire" sets a trip-hop template with its dusty loops and a lyrical quote from Talk Talk in the chorus. 'Mingle' pursues a more nocturnal mood. Knight calls it a seduction story with "a paradox hidden inside." The centrepiece 'Everybody Knows My Business Now' was the last track recorded - a slow build from solo autoharp and murmured vocals to a full arrangement with pump organ, percussion, and electric guitar. Knight delivers the escalating confession in measured phrases, letting the instrumentation carry the emotional weight.

Beanpole is careful, deliberate music that rewards close listening. Knight has crafted an album that feels intimate and spacious, using the autoharp's metallic shimmer against electronic textures to create something uniquely hers.
