tiarn is the second album from Naarm/Melbourne based ambient-folk musician and sound-collagist Hana Stretton, out via Brierfield Flood Press.

Self-recorded by Stretton in the NSW beach town of Lake Tabourie, tiarn carefully builds a sonic world of impressionistic vignettes made up of tape hiss, field recordings and considered folk songcraft.

Stretton lived in isolation by the ocean while writing and recording the album, where she made a habit of swimming during the brief blue hour of whale migration between recordings. The themes that emerged from the sessions reflect ecological decay and grief, and the search for connection in a changing world.  

The resulting songs carry the weight of these themes, but offer a cathartic reprieve for the listener, leaning on the community minded principles of folk music. This is no more apparent than on the album's centrepiece "As It Was Before This,” which features a local 60-person choir called the Forest Creek Folk.

The album has found a perfect home in boutique Australian label Brierfield Flood Press, known for releasing similarly hypnagogic records from local peers Field Commander Ali and Jordan Ireland.  Like her debut album, tiarn is also being released internationally on P.W. Elverum and Sun, the label run by Phil Elverum (The Microphones/Mount Eerie), exposing Hana Stretton's songs to a world well beyond the quiet Australian beach town they were written in.
