Before the internet and three-day international shipping, Australia was routinely out of step with what was going on, culture-wise, in the rest of the First World.

Then the rock wave finally hit in the '60s, which just happened to coincide with the introduction of a little acidic substance helping people to tune in, turn on and drop out, and a garage rock scene emerged from the cultural swamp.

In the early '70s a rock critic and soon-to-be guitarist for Patti Smith named Lenny Kane compiled his favourite Australian music on Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era, featuring such sensibly-named bands as The Electric Prunes, The Knickerbockers and Sagittarius.

To mark the 40th anniversary of the release, the current crop of garage-indebted bands have covered the original compilation in all its proto-punk, grunge and revivalist glory on Nuggets: Antipodean Interpolations of the First Psychedelic Era. With interpretations from Pond, The Murlocs, Baptism of Uzi, the album coincides with the rerelease of the original compilation, and features an introduction from both Kaye and Rolling Stone editor David Fricke.

We have five copies of Nuggets: Antipodean Interpolations of the First Psychedelic Era to give away thanks to Warner Music. Send your name and address here to enter.
