Zap the microwave frankfurts and get the Cheezels in a bowl – it’s time for an indie movie night. Paul Rudd, Emile Hirsch and David Gordon Green (director of Pineapple Express), need we say more? Win 1 of 10 copies of Prince Avalanche on DVD.

Set in 1988 – a time of glorious t-shirts – Prince Avalanche is the story of an odd pair, the meditative and stern Alvin (Paul Rudd) and his girlfriend’s brother, Lance (Emile Hirsch), dopey and insecure, who leave the city behind to spend the summer in solitude repainting traffic lines down the centre of a country highway ravaged by wildfire. As they sink into their job in the remarkable landscape, they learn more than they want to about each other and their own limitations. An unlikely friendship develops through humor and nasty exchanges, leading to surprising affection.

This film was adapted from the 2011 Icelandic drama Either Way, and there’s a touch of that muted European style in this intimate and peculiar comedy. There’s not much of a story in terms of what audiences expect from a traditional plot-driven narrative, but that’s a good thing – there is a lot of warmth to this film and it’s an enjoyable ride to watch these two characters interact and play out their personalities – so come for the indie cred, stay for the banter.

To win 1 of 10 copies of Prince Avalanche on DVD, simply tell us in 25 words or less: “Which film or TV show has the best banter between characters?”

For fans of Two Days in Paris, Napoleon Dynamite, Annie Hall, The Darjeeling Limited.

Prince Avalanche is available now.
